Week 43 – midweek report

Edit: Wrong week number in original title!

Heeling and Formal obedience

Sit-Down position change. Working on getting a snappy drop with straight hips and shoulders. It’s excellent in front of me, now to work on angling.

Side-stepping – all I can say is we’re working on it. Luring might get us there, but it’s a mess.

Stand and Stand-Stay – he might not be standing square, but he’s definitely understanding Stay as keeping position in a Stand. Also making a nice bit of progress in moving from Sit to Kick-back Stand.

Home Obedience and Steps to Success

Handling – working that grooming with my daughter, helping her learn to ‘read’ his signals better.

Lazy Leash – spent Monday morning in the village center, just working to get him ‘with’ me. He gets there faster. Another working session in nature Wednesday, and it’s really lovely to have him walking nicely beside me.

Focus outside – uh… count to 4?

Recall games outside and inside. I’m not going to trust him around bicycles and low flying birds – but he does know I’m there and I successfully called him off something interesting in the bushes.

Trick training

Differentiating Middle and Mellom – the former coming in from behind to between my legs, and the latter coming in from the front so he faces the opposite direction.

The next Challenge is out. He’s too big to jump through my arms – but maybe we can get something fun out of him jumping over me while I’m on the floor.

Social

As I mentioned under Home Obedience, we took our morning walk Monday in a populated area. Some Yellow, and thankfully the bike came so suddenly that it was past us before Fenris actually noticed. Just a small bark, and some chase-drive trigging, but it passed quickly.

Rally

A few rally-moments while out and about Monday and today. Our big challenge is regaining and keeping his focus without rewards in a distracting environment. I need to find some simple tricks and exercises he can do for warm up to gain his attention.

Very important distraction training – scents, birds… maybe not quite people yet, but I do see incredible improvement from the butterfly-brained pup he used to be!
